The only disadvantage is a lack of shade, so it's best to take children on cloudy days, very early or at the end of the day. In addition to plane-spotting, another unique feature which can be equally exciting for children is a turtle pond located immediately behind the park. A clever parent will buy turtle food from Petique (Pasadora Place) or take puppy chow along for extra fun. The area is fenced, but food can be thrown through to the turtles quite easily.

Celebrating Birthdays or Special Occasions

The Public Beach on the northern end of Seven Mile Beach (West Bay) has grills, slides, a climbing frame and swings, which really help contribute to the fun of a birthday party without adding more work! At the Seven Mile Beach Public Beach, Red Sail Sports also offers wave-runner and sailboat rentals, banana boat rides and other water activities. For other birthday park options, refer back to public parks section at the beginning of this chapter.
For pool parties, the Oasis Bar at the Grand Pavilion Courtyard is available for rental and includes a large swimming pool, a bar and a tropical area for kids to roam. For information or reservations call Larry on (345) 769 3887 or (345) 916 3887. Camana Bay also rents their pool, football pitch and the Art Centre. Other resorts may offer similar options, so call around for details. Captain Kendra from Cayman Aquatics offers life guard services for birthday pool and beach parties. You can email her on caymanaquatics@weststartv.com.
For indoor parties, South Sound Community Centre, Smyles, Senor Frogs, Margaritaville, Motions Unlimited, Cayman Critters at Bayshore Mall and Tangles Hair Salon for Kids (2nd floor inside Little Darlings Store) all offer birthday packages. Celebrations can also be contacted to organise special events.
For a party beyond the ordinary, there are helicopter, aeroplane or submarine rides, pirate ship cruises, water sports (Red Sail Sports), or even rental of the Field of Dreams complex for private games (CI$65 for 1½ hour without lights). Clare Thorpe is a children's party planner and provides services such as face painting, for CI$50 per hour. Contact her on email: clareokeefe@hotmail.com.
For decorations, characters or entertainment there are equally numerous options. Party Mart, Party Land, Party Source, Massive Equipment Rental and Celebrations all stock a variety of party items. Cakes can be ordered from any supermarket (you can even order your child's picture on a cake), or from Azzurro, Treats, Dunkin Donuts, The Captain's Bakery and The Caribbean Bakery. It is also the custom in Cayman for every child who attends a birthday party to be given a party bag. Items such as pens, pencils, stickers, bouncy balls, hair clips and inexpensive toys can be found at Petique (Pasadora Place on Smith Road), Priced Right, Cost-U-Less, Partyland and the Dollar Stores. Once children are in school, they are invited to birthday parties almost every weekend and will quickly make friends. Children are very inclusive in Cayman and usually the entire class will be invited. Parents usually attend as well and birthday parties are a great way to get to know other parents and meet new people.
